This #thankyouthursday, I am grateful for Advil.
Well, more accurately, I am grateful for generic ibuprofen, since I don’t usually buy brand-name Advil.
But off-brand or no, ibuprofen is really something, and I am really grateful for it.
Pain meds are not always the answer
In general I try to go easy on pain medication, especially since I understand pain is often a signal for me to take action, not cover up the symptom.
So usually when I have a headache, I first chug water, maybe have some caffeine or food, or take a nap if I can.
Sometimes pain meds are the answer
But there is a different kind of pain that shows up reliably every few weeks, and I have learned that, for me, offense is the best defense when it comes to menstrual cramps.
The fact that I have easy access to effective, affordable medication is not something I take for granted.
A few days ago, I felt a familiar clutch in my abdomen, thought, uh-oh…and then ten minutes later I was in the checkout line at the drugstore clutching a huge bottle of gorgeous pills.
(Seriously, as if it’s not enough that the medication is effective, it is pretty, too.)
Reliable relief is a blessing
It might seem basic, but I truly feel blessed to have access to “Advil” whenever I want it.
If I couldn’t easily tame my physical pain, I would not be able to show up in the world without wincing.
And who wants to wince if they can breathe deep instead?
